Preparing for Winter Ops Leveraging your SMS

For those organizations in the northern hemisphere, we’re at the start of winter operational considerations; notwithstanding our friends on the Canadian border or in Canada/Northern Europe who might already be knee deep in it.   As you look at the upcoming few months, have you leveraged your Safety Management System (SMS) to make sure that last year’s lessons learned are retrained and your team is well positioned for what mother nature throws at us?

On the ground, we’ve got snow, sleet, ice, and a lot more darkness to contend with.  In the air, we’ve got colder temperatures, aircraft deicing steps, and airports that aren’t always in the best of conditions!  Have you prepared your facilities and aircraft for the change?  Have you prepared your staff and passengers for the changes as well?

Seasonal safety considerations are a small subset of safety issues you should be collecting and monitoring year-round, and not for the sake of doing paperwork, but for the way you can improve your operation when you “Manage what you Measure”.    Tracking safety metrics is vital to avoiding issues, small and large, but also gives you advanced insight into trends where advanced preparation may be needed for safe operations, any time of year, at your homebase or anywhere in the world.
