Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin enforcing the REAL ID Act, requiring all passengers aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification when flying within the United States — including those on private and charter aircraft.
This federal mandate, issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is part of a nationwide effort to enhance security standards for air travel.
What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is typically a state-issued driver’s license or ID card that includes a star, flag, or other symbol in the upper portion of the card, indicating compliance with DHS regulations.
Accepted Forms of Identification Include:
- A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID
- A valid U.S. passport
- A U.S. military ID
- Other TSA-approved forms of identification
Who Does This Affect?
The requirement applies to all passengers aged 18 and over, including those flying privately or via charter, regardless of aircraft size or destination within the U.S.
How to Prepare:
- Check your current ID to see if it includes the REAL ID symbol.
- If not, visit your local DMV to upgrade your license, or plan to use a valid passport or alternate TSA-approved ID.
- Notify all travelers in your group to avoid delays or denied boarding.
